The VolunTourism Concept In the modern era, VolunTourism - the combination of volunteer
service and travel/tourism - traces its roots to the Presidency
of John F. Kennedy and the founding of the Peace Corps. In the subsequent
four decades, student travelers shifted from what was originally
just studying abroad to incorporating service into the learning
experience. Likewise academics and educators have followed a similar
track.
In the late 1980's, Eco-tourists began incorporating service into
their green experiences.
VolunTourism Think Tank
We would like to extend our thanks to Mara DelliPriscoli of the
Educational Travel Conference and Kristin Lamoureux of the International
Institute of Tourism Studies for helping us create an incredible
interactive discussion on VolunTourism.
An audience of Tourism and Volunteerism Industry professionals covered
such topics as: Access to Funding for VolunTourism, Partnerships
and Alliances to support VolunTourism, Building organizational capacity
and local community capacity to serve demand.
It was determined that a List-Serv will be created to update participants
on new research and and a followup database to provide options for
VolunTourists and VolunTourism Industry organizations and interested
Friends.
